Blooming Sikkim, Gangtok, 2011
This is a public art installation situated in one of the busiest areas of Gangok, the capital of Sikkim. Frequented by tourists, M.G. Marg is a main road off-limits to vehicular traffic, lined with buildings and shops. People from all over India and from other countries come to Sikkim for trekking and to enjoy its natural beauty. But tourists rarely engage with local residents. Tourists’ vision remains selective and mostly naïve with regard to the urban environment, as local voices are unheard and local realities unperceived. The installation attempted to add listening to the tourist experience, through stories, poems and music played at the sound booth all through the days.
